Moldova Expands Homeownership Programs for Youth

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has announced plans to expand access to state-backed mortgages for homeownership.

The announcement comes alongside a message of congratulations in honour of International Family Day.

President Sandu has requested the Moldovan government to extend the existing Prima Casă (First House) program, which offers subsidies for mortgage loans. She also proposed the launch of a new initiative, Prima Casă PLUS, aimed at increasing access to these resources for a wider range of young people, not just those employed in the public sector.

"We want to see more Moldovan families achieve their dream of homeownership," President Sandu said. "Improving living conditions is a key priority. In my travels across Moldova, I have repeatedly heard from young people about the challenges of securing affordable housing. Expanding the Prima Casă program and launching Prima Casă PLUS will provide more opportunities for young people to establish themselves, build families, and raise their children in Moldova."

Prime Minister Dorin Recean confirmed that the details of the Prima Casă PLUS program are being finalised and will be announced by the end of the week. The initiative is being developed by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, and the Overseas Development Assistance agency.

International Family Day, established by the United Nations on September 20, 1993, is celebrated annually on May 15.
