Honey Production Soars in Moldova: Forests Open to Beehives
The Republic of Moldova exported 1,715 tons of honey in 2023, representing a portion of the total production of 5,500 tons that year.
The primary markets for this honey were in Europe and Asia. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) presented these figures on Monday, May 20, coinciding with the celebration of National Bee Day.
According to MAIA, honey production in 2023 reached approximately 5,500 tons, mirroring the levels recorded in 2022.
A government statement revealed that over 100 million lei were invested in the beekeeping sector in 2023. These funds were distributed as subsidies to support the acquisition of machinery, equipment, bee colonies, and queens. Notably, at least half of the 73 applications submitted for advance subsidy measures were designated for beekeeping investments.
To bolster and promote the beekeeping sector, a draft parliamentary resolution was proposed to establish "National Bee Day," which is celebrated annually on May 20. The source indicated that this initiative aims to encourage honey consumption within Moldova.
Furthermore, through collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, modifications were made to the legal framework. These changes permit beekeepers to place their hives in forests year-round without incurring any fees.
