Moldova: Unfunded Raise Leaves University Professors At Risk

Moldovan professors at the State University of Moldova (USM) risk not receiving their May salaries and vacation pay.

This comes after the government took responsibility for raising teachers' salaries in January.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated during a press conference that the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and USM leadership are working on solutions. "We have university autonomy, but also rely on government funding for universities. I'm confident we'll find a resolution," he remarked.

Last month, the university used its own funds to cover the salary increase, but doesn't have enough for May. USM Rector Igor Șarov told TVR Moldova that universities face a budget deficit in June, risking insufficient funds for salaries and vacation pay.

"The treasury already delayed payments last month, even though we covered all salaries at the university," Șarov said. "The government did not cover the 25% salary increase."

Background: As of January 1st, teachers' salaries in Moldova were increased by up to 15%.
