Ombudsman investigates death of 29-year-old at police station in Moldovan capital
The Ombudsman has initiated an ex-officio inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 29-year-old man at the Rîșcani Police Inspectorate in Chișinău, where he had been questioned as a witness in a criminal case.

The Ombudsman stated that they will examine and document the circumstances leading to the man’s death, in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Additionally, the actions taken by authorities following the incident will be assessed, along with other relevant factors.
This ex-officio inquiry is intended to ensure the protection of fundamental rights and is part of the Ombudsman’s ongoing commitment to overseeing the actions of public authorities in upholding human dignity and the rule of law. An official investigation into the case is currently underway.
It is important to note that the 29-year-old homeless man suddenly passed away at the Rîșcani Police Inspectorate on the afternoon of February 5. According to Natalia Stati, the press officer of the Chișinău Police Department, the young man began feeling unwell during the questioning.
The police promptly called for medical assistance, but despite the doctors' efforts, he was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities have launched an official investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
