Thin ice on rivers and lakes puts lives at risk. Rescuers warn

Low temperatures in recent days have led to the formation of a thin layer of ice on rivers and lakes in the Republic of Moldova, but experts warn that it is not thick enough to support the weight of a person. The General Inspectorate for Emergencies (IGSU) warns the population of the dangers posed by traveling or carrying out recreational activities on the frozen surface of water bodies.

According to the State Hydrometeorological Service, from February 11 to 17, 2025, ice formations will persist on certain sections of the Nistru and Prut rivers, as well as on smaller rivers and lakes throughout the country. However, fluctuating temperatures are causing the ice layer to become fragile and unstable.

Rescuers recommend avoiding travel on ice, as its thickness in many areas does not reach the minimum safety standard of 10 cm. Fishermen are also advised against ice fishing, as the ice could break. If you choose to go ice fishing, do so only on lakes that are equipped with rescue stations. Always wear a life jacket and use a 15-20 meter rope for added safety.

Parents should closely supervise their children and prohibit them from approaching frozen lakes and rivers.

What to do if you fall through the ice

If someone falls into the water, experts recommend the following steps:

Stay calm and avoid sudden movements. Reach out with your hands to grab the edge of the ice and use rolling movements to pull yourself out. Call 112 for emergency assistance. Statistics

Last year, 12 people died after they fell into frozen lakes or rivers, including two minors.

Rescuers urge the public to avoid moving on thin ice and to respect safety measures. In case of an emergency, citizens should call 112 immediately.
