The Republic of Moldova will install 18 automatic air quality monitoring stations

The Republic of Moldova will establish a national air quality monitoring network comprising 18 automatic stations and one mobile station. Of these, 11 stations will be acquired with the assistance of a European grant, while the remaining stations will be funded by other donor institutions and development partners. These new stations will enable authorities to continuously monitor pollution levels and implement measures to improve air quality, according to the Minister of Environment, Sergiu Lazarencu.

According to an official statement, a significant number of air quality monitoring stations will be established in Chișinău, with additional stations located throughout the country in the south, north, east, and west.

“The highest levels of pollution are found in areas with heavy traffic. Currently, we do not have a heavy industrial sector, so traffic is the main source of pollution. We must share this data, including with international institutions. It is essential for our country to have this information to monitor the situation and take necessary action to improve air quality,” said Sergiu Lazarencu at a press conference.

The project also involves developing a methodology for creating air quality plans. This approach will assist local and national authorities in identifying specific actions to reduce pollution.

“The local public administration will be required to implement certain measures. Not all decisions fall under the central administration's authority, but we will work on solutions to optimize traffic and enhance infrastructure to reduce pollution caused by traffic congestion,” the minister concluded.

Currently, the Republic of Moldova has 17 air quality monitoring stations.
