New traffic monitoring in Moldova targets seatbelt and phone use

Over 1,500 drivers were caught without seatbelts or using their mobile phones while driving in the first week following the adjustment of the traffic monitoring system, reports the General Inspectorate of Police (IGP).

According to the authorities, the goal of this system is not only to enforce penalties but also to enhance road discipline and prevent accidents.

To reduce road risks, the IGP reminds drivers of a few essential rules:

The traffic monitoring cameras also detect violations such as not wearing a seatbelt and using a phone while driving.

It is worth mentioning that, starting February 10, the traffic monitoring cameras in the Republic of Moldova will detect new types of violations, including using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

According to the General Inspectorate of Police, information about violations will be automatically verified through an electronic system, ensuring the accuracy of the results. Drivers see this measure as necessary, noting that inattention while driving is one of the leading causes of road accidents.

Those caught by surveillance cameras talking on the phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt face a fine of up to 600 lei and three penalty points.

Previously, the video monitoring system only recorded speeding and running red lights. Currently, there are 149 surveillance cameras installed across the Republic of Moldova, which will help improve road safety.
