EU provides €60 million to strengthen the Republic of Moldova’s defense

The European Union will provide €60 million in 2025 to enhance the Republic of Moldova’s defense capabilities, announced the President of the European Council António Costa. He emphasized the importance of EU support for regional security.

"We were all born from the ashes of World War II, and we will continue to ensure peace and security for Europe. We invest in defence not to provoke war, but to preserve peace. That is why, we support the Republic of Moldova—to help it defend its independence and freely choose its future, a future that aligns with our common path toward our Union," stated European Council President António Costa.

In this context, we recall that at the end of last year, the Parliament approved the National Security Strategy, at the initiative of the country's President, Maia Sandu. The Strategy provides for an increase in Defense spending to one percent of the GDP by 2030. The new Strategy aims to increase the state's capacity to prevent and counteract the materialization of risks to national security, as well as to ensure the process of European integration and cooperation with partner states. According to the document, the war in the neighboring country, Ukraine, the illegal stationing of Russian troops on the territory to the left of the Nistru, as well as the hybrid war waged by the Russian Federation, directly or through intermediaries, are the main threats and security risks to the country.
