Moldova’s delay in accrediting Russian ambassador raises tensions

On March 5, 2025, Lilian Darii, the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Moscow, was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On this occasion, Russian officials expressed surprise that Oleg Ozerov, the newly appointed Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, who arrived in Chișinău last October, has not yet been received by President Maia Sandu to present his credentials. Moscow claims that "Chișinău is violating the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations."

Representatives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed the Moldovan diplomat a copy of the Vienna Convention and a note verbale requesting explanations about the situation. The authorities in Chișinău have not yet commented on this matter.

It is worth mentioning that the former Russian Ambassador to Chișinău, Oleg Vasnetsov, was dismissed from his position on September 10 last year, by a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin. He was succeeded by Oleg Ozerov, who has served in various diplomatic roles in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, and France. Since May 2020, Ozerov has been the Ambassador for Special Missions and Head of the Secretariat of the Russia-Africa Economic Forum.

Previously, Moldova's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi, stated that the newly appointed Russian Ambassador to Chișinău was confirmed in his position after Moldovan authorities reviewed his background.
