MFA warns Moldovans to avoid northern India due to high terrorist risk

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Republic of Moldova has issued a travel warning for Moldovan citizens who are in, transiting through, or planning to travel to the Republic of India. The ministry advises against travel to the Jammu and Kashmir region and border areas with Pakistan due to the heightened risk of terrorist attacks and actions by insurgent or separatist groups.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges citizens to strictly follow the instructions of local authorities and reminds them that the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in New Delhi is available for consular assistance in emergencies, such as accidents, deaths, or natural disasters.

This advisory comes in the wake of a serious armed attack that occurred on April 22, 2025, in the tourist area of Pahalgam, Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir. Twenty-six people were killed—most of them Indian tourists, along with two foreigners—after four unidentified attackers opened fire in Baisaran Meadow, a popular mountain spot. The attack was claimed by the group "Kashmir Resistance," citing dissatisfaction over demographic changes in the region.

The incident, considered the deadliest attack on civilians in the area in the last 25 years, was strongly condemned by Indian authorities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to bring those responsible to justice, and Interior Minister Amit Shah called an emergency meeting in Srinagar. Tourists have begun leaving the region, and some schools have closed as a precaution.

Jammu and Kashmir remains a tense region, long embroiled in a territorial dispute between India, Pakistan, and China, with frequent military clashes and separatist incidents.
