Polling stations in Moldova have opened for presidential election in Romania. Over 5,600 voters by 2:30 p.m.

Starting today, May 2, Romanian citizens residing in the Republic of Moldova can vote in the presidential elections in Romania. 64 polling stations were established in the Republic of Moldova. These stations will be open for three days—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—from 07:00 to 21:00.

By 12:30, over 5,670 Romanian citizens in the Republic of Moldova had exercised their right to vote in the presidential elections. They are among the over 42,400 voters who had already voted abroad on the first day of voting.
By 10:30, over 1,900 Romanian citizens in the Republic of Moldova had exercised their right to vote in the presidential elections. They are among the almost 14,000 voters who have already voted abroad on the first day of voting.
To facilitate voter access, the number of polling stations has been increased by five compared to the previous election. Their distribution is 18 polling stations in the North region, 38 in the Center, and 20 in the South.
Romanian citizens with valid documents can vote for one of the 11 candidates registered in the race for President of Romania.
To ensure the safe conduct of the electoral process, the Police of the Republic of Moldova announces that it will monitor the transport of ballots and electoral documents and guard all polling stations.
The first round of the presidential elections in Romania takes place on Sunday, May 4, 2025, and voting in the diaspora takes place over three days, between May 2 and 4. The electoral process began on the evening of May 1, at 10:00 PM, with the opening of the first polling station in Auckland, New Zealand. In total, 965 polling stations are organized outside Romania’s borders in 142 countries—a record number compared to previous elections.
Romanians in the diaspora can vote with a valid Romanian identity card, regardless of their residence, by being registered on additional lists.
In Romania, the election takes place on a single day—May 4—in approximately 18,968 polling stations, and over 18 million citizens with the right to vote are registered on the permanent electoral lists. If no candidate gets an absolute majority of votes (50%+1) in the first round, the second round of voting is scheduled for May 18, 2025.
The elected president's mandate is five years, and his or her duties include foreign policy, national defence, the appointment of key state officials, and mediation between institutions. The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) and the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) supervise the electoral process, and transparency is ensured through the real-time publication of relevant data.
