Silent protest in front of the Russian Embassy in Chisinau. Moldovan journalists' message to the Kremlin

Dozens of journalists gathered outside the Russian Embassy in Chisinau on Tuesday for a public demonstration titled "We Write on Behalf of Those Who Can No Longer." Organized by the Center for Independent Journalism (CJI), the event served as a gesture of solidarity with journalists oppressed by the Kremlin regime and a protest against the pressures and attacks on independent media.

Participants wrote messages on behalf of silenced, arrested, or murdered journalists, which they displayed on a billboard in front of the Embassy.
This action also aimed to denounce disinformation campaigns and propaganda from Russia.
“We stand in solidarity for the fourth consecutive year with our colleagues—those who have suffered from the Kremlin’s policies. Today, we are protesting through silence, leaving messages on behalf of those who can no longer write, including colleagues who have died or are imprisoned,” said Anastasia Nani, the Deputy Director of the CJI.
She also highlighted the Republic of Moldova's position in the global rankings for press freedom.
“If we look at the Reporters Without Borders index, we currently rank 35th. Yes, we have dropped four positions; however, compared to other countries, the situation is somewhat better in the Republic of Moldova,” noted Anastasia Nani.
We remind you that recently, nine non-governmental media organizations launched the Memorandum on Press Freedom in the Republic of Moldova. This document provides an overview of the situation in the media sector, based on analysis conducted from May 3, 2024, to May 3, 2025. It shows that media in the country continue to face serious challenges. The increase in online attacks and harassment of journalists, particularly during election campaigns, as well as other forms of pressure on reporters—especially in the Gagauz autonomy and on the left bank of the Nistru—are among the primary obstacles to the activity of the media.
