President Maia Sandu celebrates her birthday today

President Maia Sandu, Moldova's first female head of state, turns 53 today, May 24.

Maia Sandu was born on May 24, 1972, in Risipeni, Fălești district.

After winning that year's presidential elections, Maia Sandu has been the President of the Republic of Moldova since December 24, 2020. She was re-elected for a second term in 2024, thus becoming the first politician in the Republic of Moldova to be directly elected by the citizens for two consecutive terms as president.

We recall that in the October 30, 2016 elections, President Maia Sandu lost to her opponent, Igor Dodon. Still, four years later, she defeated him with an impressive margin of votes. In the October 20, 2024 elections, Maia Sandu obtained over 55 percent of the votes cast.

She served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova from June to November 2019 and Minister of Education from 2012 to 2015.

She founded the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), which she led until December 2020.

Maia Sandu studied at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Moldova. She received a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University.

Before returning to the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu was an advisor to the World Bank's executive director.
