EU supports Moldova's Parliament in aligning laws with the acquis communautaire

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova plays a crucial role in the European integration process, serving as the institution where all draft laws aligned with European Union directives are debated and adopted. This statement was made by MP Ina Coșeru during the launch of the Twinning project titled "Strengthening the Capacities of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in the European Integration Process." During the event, MPs from Italy, Romania, and Austria reaffirmed their support for the Republic of Moldova’s European path and the strengthening of its legislative body in Chișinău.

The project is being implemented with the support of the parliaments of Romania, Italy, Hungary, and Austria. It aims to strengthen the institutional capacities of the Moldovan legislature in three dimensions, aligning national legislation with the community acquis, strengthening the capacity to supervise the application of laws, and optimizing the internal processes of the parliament and its secretariat.
The deputy emphasized that 2025 is crucial for the Republic of Moldova's European path and called for unity and cohesion.
"This year is very important, we must consolidate all our forces to bring pro-European parties, to form a pro-European majority and to continue the exercise of European integration of the Republic of Moldova. (..) This year, it is essential for our country to consolidate ourselves, to be a power, to be a society with one voice and to move towards the major objective of our country, integration into the great European family", noted Coșeru.
Lia Quartapelle Procopio, a deputy in the Italian Parliament, believes solidarity between European states is essential in the accession process. According to her, the Twinning project supports the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in preparing for integration, and this collective support reflects the strength of European unity.
"I am honored to be here. As happens in a family, we come together to help each other. The Twinning project is meant to support the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova to be prepared for the moment of accession and we hope that this moment will come as soon as possible. Being part of the European Union is an excellent opportunity because together we are stronger and it is a good chance to exchange ideas, learn from each other how to govern, protect our citizens and improve their lives. Democracy is similar in these countries, and our cooperation is easier, we are here to help the Parliament prepare".
In turn, Stefan Schennach, a member of the Austrian Parliament, expressed his belief that the support offered by the European states will significantly contribute to the advancement of the Republic of Moldova on the path to accession to the European Union. He recalled that Austria also benefited from support at the time of its accession, and now it is the turn of the member states to offer the same support to our country.
“Apart we are not that strong, only united in these strong EU institutions do we have more power. We wish you success and Austria will be by your side on the path to accession”.
Petre Florin Manole, a deputy in the Romanian Parliament, reiterated the neighboring country’s support for the Republic of Moldova's European path.
“Romania supports the Republic of Moldova on any of the topics it can and is requested to, on any subject, in any field and at any moment in our common history”, the Romanian deputy emphasized.
We note that the Republic of Moldova is currently undergoing the process of accession to the European Union, a strategic path that involves complex reforms and the gradual alignment of national legislation with European norms and standards.
In June 2022, our country officially obtained the status of candidate country for accession alongside Ukraine, following the European Commission's recommendation and the decision of EU leaders.
The European Council approved the opening of accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova at the end of 2023.
Currently, the country is assessing its degree of readiness, also known as screening. The next steps aim to open negotiation chapters covering all areas of European policies—from the economy, agriculture, and environment to justice, home affairs, and social policies.
