National day of mourning. Master Eugen Doga is laid to rest today

Today, June 5, the Republic of Moldova bids farewell to Eugen Doga, a composer who has influenced generations and brought Moldovan music to the global stage. The day of the funeral has been declared a national day of mourning to honor one of the most respected figures in Eastern European culture.

The commemorative program begins at 08:00 with a divine service and procession at "Saint Teodora de la Sihla" Church in Chișinău. Starting at 10:00, the late Master's body will be displayed in the large hall of the "Nicolae Sulac" National Palace, where the "In Memoriam Eugen Doga" ceremony and a mourning rally will take place.

The farewell procession is scheduled for 12:50, and the funeral cortege will move to the Central Cemetery on Armenească Street at 13:00. The funeral ceremony will occur at 14:00.

Throughout the day, state flags will be lowered to half-mast, and public institutions and citizens are encouraged to observe a moment of silence in memory of the Master.

Eugen Doga was an iconic figure in Moldovan music, with a career spanning over six decades. He composed music for films, ballets, choruses, and instrumental pieces. He gained international recognition by collaborating with director Emil Loteanu on films such as "The Fiddlers," "My Sweet and Tender Beast" and "Maria, Mirabela."

UNESCO included the waltz from "My Sweet and Tender Beast" in its list of musical masterpieces of the 20th century. Doga's legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of an entire nation and the global audience that cherished his music.

Eugen Doga passed away on June 3 at the age of 88.
