Brussels: Transnistrian region is part of the Republic of Moldova; conflict solution will come “at the appropriate time”

The European Commission upholds the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, emphasizing that the Transnistrian region is an integral part of the state. European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated this in an interview with "Radio Moldova." She also mentioned that a resolution to the Transnistrian conflict will be found "at the appropriate time" with the support of international partners.

"We have a beautiful tradition in the European Union: when necessary, solutions are found even for seemingly impossible problems. I am confident that when the right time comes, a solution will be found," declared the Commissioner.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated that the European Union does not impose any conditions on the Republic of Moldova regarding the resolution of the Transnistrian conflict. However, the reintegration process is occurring gradually through the intensification of social and commercial exchanges between both banks of the Nistru.

"We are working with the European Commission to reintegrate the Transnistrian region. There are no conditionalities for Moldova's integration into the European Union. At the same time, we recognize the need to reintegrate the Transnistrian region, which is already happening. More and more social and commercial exchanges are taking place. Already, over 80 percent of the region's trade is with the European Union, and the remaining trade is with the rest of the country. We are witnessing an increasing demand from those on the left bank of the Nistru for jobs, social services, and medical care. They are beginning to work on the right bank, pay taxes, and are asking for reintegration," emphasized Dorin Recean.

We remind you that on June 4, the 9th meeting of the EU-Republic of Moldova Association Council took place in Brussels. During this meeting, the European Union reaffirmed its strong support for Moldova's European path, appreciating the country's reform efforts in key areas such as the rule of law, judicial reform, and the fight against corruption.

In the context of the regional situation marked by Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the Council reiterated the EU's strong support for the Republic of Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
