Brussels and Chișinău plan to connect Moldova’s energy market to EU by 2027

The European Union has consistently supported the Republic of Moldova in its efforts to enhance energy security and move forward with European integration. This was stated by Dan Jørgensen, the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, during the sixth high-level meeting of the Republic of Moldova - European Union Energy Dialogue. According to Commissioner Jørgensen, Moldova has made significant progress in reducing its reliance on Russian gas and is working towards integrating into the community bloc's energy market, which could potentially occur by 2027.

Through our collective efforts, we can address the challenges of ensuring a stable electricity supply for the Republic of Moldova. It is essential to focus on fully integrating the Moldovan energy system with that of the European Union and the European energy market. Our clear goal is to achieve complete coupling of the Moldovan market with that of the EU by 2027. Building infrastructure and energy projects will help enhance the energy security of the Republic of Moldova and support its integration into European markets. Furthermore, adapting the Energy Law in line with EU standards is crucial.

The Republic of Moldova plays an active role in ensuring national energy security and promoting regional stability amid a complex geopolitical landscape, stated Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu. He emphasized that the meeting's agenda included both the challenges and opportunities our country faces—ranging from securing supplies and reforming markets to developing renewable energy sources and accelerating our integration into the European Union.

"This meeting reaffirms our strong belief that the energy future of the Republic of Moldova lies within the European family. I refer to the coupling of our energy market with that of Europe, even before we become a member of the European Union. We are actively reforming our entire energy system—legal, institutional, and operational—to align with the standards and values of the European Union. We have already made significant progress acknowledged by our international partners," Minister Junghietu emphasized.

The European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, is on a working visit to the Republic of Moldova. He has already met with Prime Minister Dorin Recean to discuss key issues regarding Moldova's European integration and the strengthening of cooperation in the energy sector. On Thursday morning, Dan Jørgensen visited a vulnerable family in the Republic of Moldova that is benefiting from renovation work to improve energy efficiency, supported by European programs.
