Correspondence by Dan Alexe // European Parliament debates a new resolution on the Republic of Moldova

The European Parliament will meet in a plenary session today to discuss the EU Commission's reports on the Republic of Moldova for 2023 and 2024, after which it will adopt a resolution. The rapporteur for these reports is Sven Mikser, a socialist MEP from Estonia. Notably, this report praises the Republic of Moldova, a rare occurrence for a candidate country.

The report highlights that the results of both the constitutional referendum on EU accession, held on October 20, 2024, and the presidential elections, which took place on October 20 and November 3, 2024, demonstrate strong support among Moldovan citizens for the country's goal of joining the EU and implementing pro-EU reforms.

However, there are criticisms to address, including delays in the justice system, high levels of corruption, and the status of minorities. Overall, the report is largely positive and emphasizes that the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28, 2025, will be crucial for maintaining Moldova's pro-EU trajectory. The EU expressed concerns about the potential for increased foreign interference, particularly from Russia, and hybrid attacks leading up to the elections. The EU has committed to providing support, including financial and technical assistance, to help the Government of Moldova counter such interference in its democratic processes. This support may also include placing additional sanctions, extending and enhancing the mandate and resources of the EU Partnership Mission (EUPM) in Moldova, and sharing expertise on foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), as well as strengthening resilience against hybrid threats.

Furthermore, the European Parliament called for increased efforts by both Moldovan and EU authorities to support independent media and pro-democracy civil society organizations. This will help journalists at both national and regional levels combat FIMI and enhance digital literacy.

In summary, the agreement is very positive and anticipates the effective initiation of accession negotiations.
