EU–Moldova Summit: Key topics and expected outcomes, Janis Mazeiks

The EU-Moldova summit , set for July 4 in Chisinau, is described as "an unprecedented event" by Janis Mazeiks, the EU Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, in an interview with Agora. According to the ambassador, this high-level meeting highlights the significant importance that Brussels places on its relationship with Chisinau.

The European Union does not hold summits with all countries but only with its main partners. Mazeiks emphasized that the fact that this summit is taking place in Chisinau, with the participation of high-level European representatives, signals a very close relationship.

The ambassador explained that the event will serve as a broad platform to discuss key topics of mutual interest, such as the Republic of Moldova's European integration process, ongoing reforms, energy challenges, and the implications of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Economic Growth Plan for Moldova will also be on the agenda.

“This is an opportunity not only for Moldovan officials but also for the European Commission and EU member states to jointly assess the progress of the Republic of Moldova and outline the next steps in the accession process,” the official added.

When asked about the concrete results of the summit, the ambassador specified that certain announcements are still being discussed. However, a joint statement is expected to emphasize the European Union's strong support for Moldova's European path and the measures that will be implemented to accelerate it.

"I would not speculate on specific outcomes, but it is possible that we will see clear progress in several areas. Certainly, the summit will not address issues related to the opening of negotiations on Chapter 1, but it is an important step toward integration. We will, of course, also discuss the Growth Plan for Moldova, which is valued at 1.9 billion euros," Mazeiks concluded.

It is noteworthy that the European Union will be represented by the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the first Republic of Moldova-European Union summit, scheduled to take place in Chisinau on July 4.

The meeting, planned for 5:00 p.m. at the State Residence, will be hosted by President Maia Sandu, as stated by the Presidency. In addition to the head of state, the Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu, and Prime Minister Dorin Recean will also participate in the event from the Republic of Moldova.
