The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova is joining forces with law enforcement agencies to prevent fraud in the upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for September 28.

CEC Vice President Pavel Postica announced on Radio Moldova that concrete measures have already been developed, and inter-agency working groups have been formed to address the most pressing issues in the electoral process. Chief among these concerns are illegal party financing and voter bribery.

“Within the working group, we have discussed—and will continue to discuss—all the problems we observe in the electoral process so that public authorities can respond quickly and appropriately to any violations,” Postica stated.

He acknowledged that some individuals will likely attempt to circumvent electoral rules. However, he expressed hope that citizens have learned from past elections and will not be persuaded to sell their votes.

“I hope that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova understand it’s not worth trading their vote for 1,000 to 1,500 lei when they risk a substantial fine of tens of thousands of lei,” added the CEC vice president.

Under current law, individuals who accept, offer, or solicit goods, services, or other undue advantages to influence electoral rights face fines ranging from 25,000 to 37,500 lei.
