Moldova opens embassy in Kazakhstan, boosting Central Asia ties

The Republic of Moldova officially opened its embassy in Kazakhstan on July 2, 2025, at a ceremony held in Astana.

The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi, and his Kazakh counterpart, Murat Nurtleu, as well as members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the Kazakh capital.

The ceremony began with the signing of the embassy's Guestbook (Book of Honor) by the two ministers, officially launching the Republic of Moldova's new diplomatic mission in Central Asia.

The embassy, led by career diplomat Ștefan Gorda, will provide consular services to Moldovan citizens in Kazakhstan, support the business community, and strengthen bilateral cooperation in key areas such as economy, education, culture, and science.

"The opening of the embassy in Astana reflects the Republic of Moldova's commitment to developing sustainable cooperation with Kazakhstan, as well as with the entire Central Asian region. We aim to be closer to our citizens, but also to the opportunities this cooperation offers in political, economic, and other sectors," stated Mihai Popșoi.

Kazakhstan's Foreign Minister, Murat Nurtleu, welcomed this initiative and reiterated the Kazakh authorities' openness to developing the bilateral partnership: "The opening of the embassy strengthens Kazakhstan's ties with the international community and contributes to the development of friendship and cooperation in various fields with the Republic of Moldova. I assure you of the full support of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Government."

During the event, Minister Mihai Popșoi awarded two Moldovan citizens residing in Astana with Government Certificates of Honor. Aurel Gîscă was recognized for his civic engagement and support in consolidating the Republic of Moldova's diplomatic presence in Kazakhstan, while Natalia Karagoz was recognized for her active contribution to promoting national cultural heritage.

The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Astana will function as a direct liaison point with the Kazakh authorities and support the Republic of Moldova's efforts to expand its diplomatic presence and influence in the Central Asian region.
