World Bank names Ulrich Schmitt Moldova country manager

The World Bank Group has appointed Ulrich Schmitt as its new Country Manager for Moldova, effective July 1.
Schmitt succeeds Inguna Dobraja, who has served as the World Bank Group's Country Manager since July 2021.
The new Country Manager aims to collaborate with both the public and private sectors to find solutions for job creation, human capital development, and enhancing Moldova's competitiveness.
"Despite the series of crises triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, coupled with other persistent development challenges, Moldova's status as an EU candidate country, combined with a strong impetus for reforms and investments in resilience, presents a significant opportunity for the country to foster long-term sustainable growth," stated Ulrich Schmitt.
The World Bank Group's new Country Manager for Moldova is a German national. He most recently served as Operations Manager for Myanmar and Thailand, and was based in Bangkok.
Ulrich Schmitt brings over 20 years of experience with the World Bank. His previous roles include Lead Agriculture Economist within the World Bank's Europe and Central Asia Department in Washington, D.C.; Program Leader for Sustainable Development at the World Bank Office for Sri Lanka and Maldives, based in Colombo; and Senior Natural Resources Economist for investment operations and analytical assignments, based in Beijing, China. Schmitt holds a PhD in Natural Resource Management from the Technical University of Munich.
It's worth noting that the World Bank Group supports sustainable development and Moldova's objective to progress on its path towards European Union accession through implemented reforms. This also includes strengthening digitalization capacities to fortify systems and institutions across the public and private sectors.
