Expert: Russia coordinates three electoral blocs in Moldova's parliamentary elections

Pro-Russian parties and influence networks coordinated by the Russian Federation pose a significant threat to the democracy of the Republic of Moldova. Their goal is to undermine Moldova's statehood, compromise its sovereignty, divert the country from its European path, and transform it into a zone of influence controlled by Moscow. This warning was issued by public policy and security expert Andrei Curararu during the IN CONTEXT show on Moldova 1. Curararu also stated that the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova risk becoming a geopolitical confrontation with regional implications.

The expert argues that the plans of the Moscow-led groups are becoming increasingly transparent, especially following the statements made at the congress of the "Pobeda" bloc organized last weekend in Moscow by the fugitive Ilan Shor.

"The masks are off in the case of the Shor group. They openly admit their goals and explain why they lost substantial sums in the last elections: they aim for the renunciation of the statehood of the Republic of Moldova by collecting signatures in favor of a supposed union with Russia. We observed this at the economic summit in St. Petersburg: they want the ruble to function in the Republic of Moldova and desire an economic union. They want the foreign policy of the Republic of Moldova to be determined by the Russian Federation, which would effectively turn us into a colony on the shores of NATO," explained Andrei Curăraru on Moldova 1.

According to the security expert, Shor acts as an intermediary for Moscow’s interests, laundering Russian money to procure military equipment. "He sees himself as a ‘viceroy’ who would transform our country into a grey area of insecurity and a reliable source of soldiers for the Russian army," the expert stated.

In this context, he noted that some leaders of pro-Russian groups are under criminal investigation or have already been convicted. Yet, massive Russian funding motivates them to engage in Moldovan politics.

Andrei Curăraru warns that the potential involvement of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in the Republic of Moldova would result in the complete loss of our state’s sovereignty. "If we had CSTO troops deployed in the Republic of Moldova, we would become a ‘great Transnistrian region.’ We would be controlled from the outside, just like this pseudo-entity, Transnistrian region," the expert cautioned.

The same source highlighted political corruption, which would directly or indirectly benefit several individuals and political entities in Moldova, including Victoria Furtună, affiliated with the Shor group, and the former Bashkan of Gagauzia, Irina Vlah.

In Curăraru's opinion, at least three pro-Russian factions may emerge in the upcoming elections: the “Pentru Moldova” Bloc, associated with socialist and communist parties; the “Alternativa” Bloc, with individuals involved in anti-Ukrainian activities and connections to Russian special services; and the “Pobeda” Bloc, coordinated by the fugitive convict Ilan Shor. "We also observe a trend where the Russian Federation encourages these politicians to declare their pro-Russian stance openly. We might encounter surprises," Andrei Curăraru concluded.

We remind you that the parliamentary elections are scheduled for September 28, 2025. Both the authorities in Chișinău and Brussels, along with security experts, warn of new attempts by the Russian Federation to influence the election results to hinder Moldova's European integration. Additionally, seven political parties may suspend their activities due to illegal financing and electoral corruption.
