Moldovan driving licenses now recognized in the UK; no exams required for drivers

The list of states that recognize Moldovan driving licenses is continuously growing, and now includes the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. On July 9, the government approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the British government, which outlines the mutual exchange of driving licenses without the need for examinations.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, announced that the new agreement offers significant advantages for Moldovans living in the United Kingdom.

“The implementation of this memorandum benefits citizens of the Republic of Moldova residing in the United Kingdom by greatly simplifying the administrative processes related to driving rights. It reduces the costs and duration of exchanging licenses and facilitates mobility through the recognition of these licenses,” the minister stated during a government meeting.

Misail-Nichitin also noted that switching residency between the Republic of Moldova and the United Kingdom will no longer require individuals to take driving exams.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized the importance of this development for Moldovans in the diaspora, stating, “It is clear that we are making life easier for our diaspora, especially in the United Kingdom.”

The agreement aims to strengthen Moldovan-British relations and is founded on principles of equity and reciprocity. It allows for the exchange of expired driving permits without the need for additional tuition or other expenses.

We remind you that the Republic of Moldova has reached similar agreements with Ireland, Latvia, Spain, Greece, Israel, Turkey, Albania, and Lithuania. An agreement with France has been initialed and is set to take effect soon, and there is also a joint declaration of intent between the Republic of Moldova and Germany regarding this matter.
