Italy strongly supports the Republic of Moldova's European journey and remains a dependable partner in its efforts to join the European Union. This message was reinforced during an official meeting between President Maia Sandu and her Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, at the Quirinale Palace in Rome, the official residence of the Italian president.

The discussions between the two heads of state focused on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing economic cooperation, and the ongoing support provided by Italy to Moldovan citizens residing in Italy. The Moldovan community in Italy is recognized as active, well-integrated, and significantly contributing to the economic development of both countries.

President Maia Sandu stated, “We found in President Mattarella a firm supporter of Moldovans, Moldova, and our European path. Italy has shown us that it has confidence in our future and has offered us consistent support.”

A key topic of the meeting was the recent approval of the bilateral agreement on social protection, which was promulgated by the Italian President on July 1. This agreement ensures that Moldovans who have worked in Italy are entitled to receive pensions for the years they have worked, regardless of whether they remain in Italy or return to the Republic of Moldova.

In Rome, another important agreement was signed regarding the conversion of driving licenses. This updated document facilitates the recognition and exchange of all Moldovan driving permits in Italy, including those issued in the future, thereby eliminating the difficulties previously encountered by Moldovan citizens.

Relations between the Republic of Moldova and Italy have significantly improved in recent years, partly due to President Maia Sandu's official visit to Rome in June 2021. During this period, Italy provided approximately 90 million euros in financial support, primarily for social protection and energy efficiency initiatives. This support included financing for the Vulnerability Reduction Fund and the installation of tens of thousands of smart meters to monitor energy consumption.
