Works to consolidate the dam over the Prut started in Cantemir

After years of uncertainty and the threat of flooding, the Ministry of Environment started the consolidation and rehabilitation of a 13-kilometer section of the protective dam along the Prut River, close to the commune of Țiganca, Cantemir district. This project aims to prevent flooding of agricultural lands, homes, and institutions, and the residents welcome this initiative.
The residents of Țiganca commune recall vividly the events of 2010, when thousands of hectares of agricultural land, hundreds of households, and social institutions in the villages along the river were flooded.
"Here where we are, the water was 3-4 meters deep. I had corn, sunflower, the whole village was under water. Now I see that the protective dam is being built on the other side. It is a very good thing for us and we are very satisfied";
"I cannot insure my house, because we are in the risk area and no one from the neighbourhood, who lives on this side of the road, can insure their house", said the people.
Local authorities mention that it is an important project, since the dam will protect an area where four localities are located.
"The protective dam was cracked, damaged and the water found a way to pass through and flooded approximately 300 hectares. Around 50 households in the village of Ghioltosu were in danger, which were almost flooded" declared Gabriel Șișianu, the mayor of the village of Țiganca.
"This work, initiated by the Ministry of Environment, comes to strengthen the protective dam of the Prut River in the vicinity of the villages of Stoianovca, Țiganca, Țiganca Nouă and Ghioltosu. In this area there are approximately 1700 hectares of agricultural land owned by individuals" said Pavel Culicovschi, president of the Cantemir district.
The works are to be completed by November. Their budget exceeds 18 million lei.
