Approximately 3,500 hip and knee replacement surgeries were performed in the first half of this year in Moldova, an increase of about 400 compared to the same period last year, according to the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM).

The majority of these replacement surgeries involved the knee (2,450 cases), followed by the hip (1,018 cases), and the shoulder (9 cases).

These surgical procedures are performed under a special musculoskeletal prosthetic program, funded by compulsory health insurance.

For cases treated in the first six months of the current year under this program, the National Health Insurance Company allocated over 232 million lei—an increase of approximately 25 million compared to the same period in the previous year.

In addition to the per-case payment within the system, over 8.5 million lei were allocated for expensive consumables for hip, knee, and shoulder revision surgeries, as well as for individual prostheses and necessary medications for the rehabilitation of patients with musculoskeletal tumors.

Replacement surgeries for major joints were performed in 22 medical institutions contracted by CNAM.

All insured individuals with medical indications for such an operation and who are on waiting lists benefit from these prosthetic interventions free of charge.
