Maia Sandu on Plahotniuc detention: Justice must be served

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has publicly responded to the detention of former Democratic Party leader Vladimir Plahotniuc in Greece.

The head of state declared that now's the time for justice to take its course and for the extradition to be carried out swiftly, in accordance with international procedures.

"After six years, we finally have some good news. It's crucial that all relevant institutions work to secure the extradition. The extradition must happen as soon as possible, obviously respecting all procedures. Now, Moldovan justice has no more reason to delay. Justice must be served," Maia Sandu told reporters.

The President described the detention as a success for the authorities involved in this endeavor, but she clarified that the true triumph will be when the former politician answers to the law.

"This is a success for all the institutions that worked on this matter. But for us to truly rejoice, we need to see justice served to the very end," the head of state added.

It should be noted that Vladimir Plahotniuc's detention at Athens Airport on the morning of July 22 was confirmed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. Four arrest warrants have been issued in his name, and Moldovan authorities have initiated the official extradition procedure from the Hellenic Republic.
