Bulgaria backs Moldova's EU bid, pledges support

Bulgaria highly commends the Republic of Moldova's progress on its path toward European Union (EU) accession, stated Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Dorin Recean in Chișinău on July 27.

According to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, the reforms undertaken by the Chișinău government have been "evident" since 2022. He added that the July 4 Declaration, approved at the Moldova-EU Summit, further details Brussels' support for Moldova's EU membership.

"A key guarantee is the start of negotiations with the first cluster, which is incredibly significant as it encompasses fundamental premises and essential rights, including the vital issue of ethnicity," Rossen Jeliazkov declared. "Bulgaria will share its full experience regarding EU accession, offering not just active support but also the perspective of a country that has learned a great deal from this process. These are difficult reforms—reforms that society must accept and understand as a shared cause."

In turn, Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized that the Republic of Moldova maintains trusting relationships with all EU member states, highlighting the partnership with Bulgaria as a compelling example. "Our country has become 'home' for thousands of families of Bulgarian origin, and now, together, we are building a European future," Dorin Recean affirmed.

"Today, we're meeting again with a friendly and partner country – the Republic of Bulgaria – at a time when Moldova is undergoing a significant phase of transformation and modernization," Dorin Recean stated. "We've jointly built projects in education, culture, infrastructure, energy, and community development. These are visible investments that truly matter. Thank you for your trust in Moldova, for your solidarity, your investments, and your openness to cooperation. We share a common path – towards a stronger, more united Europe, closer to its citizens."

Dorin Recean also specified that later today, July 27, he and his Bulgarian counterpart would visit Taraclia, where they will meet with mayors, school directors, cultural center leaders, and local residents to discuss new opportunities for the development of the Bulgarian community.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov is visiting the Republic of Moldova from July 27-28. According to the agenda, the heads of government from Chișinău and Sofia will participate in a signing ceremony in Taraclia to formalize an agreement for the former Taraclia University to become a branch of the "Angel Kanchev" University of Ruse, Bulgaria.

On Monday, July 28, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov will have separate meetings with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and the Speaker of Parliament, Igor Grosu.
