Condolences // Moldova’s Embassy in Bucharest: “Ion Iliescu helped affirm our sovereignty and identity”

Ion Iliescu, the first president of post-communist Romania, played an important role in affirming the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, according to a message of condolence from the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Romania. This statement was issued shortly after the announcement of the former head of state’s death. Notably, this is the only official condolence message from the authorities in Chisinau released to the public following Ion Iliescu's passing.
On behalf of the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, we extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family and the citizens of Romania on the passing of Ion Iliescu, the first President of Romania. His historic decision to be the first to recognize the independence of the Republic of Moldova was pivotal, as it affirmed our sovereignty, freedom, and national identity during a crucial moment in our history.
According to the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Bucharest, this decision, along with the establishment of diplomatic relations and the revival of cultural and economic ties between Moldova and Romania, "gave us the chance to thoroughly rebuild our special relationship, marked by the same language, culture, identity, and history."
"Eternal memory to Ion Iliescu, the first post-Decembrist President of Romania," concludes the message of condolences made public on Wednesday, August 6.
As a reminder, Ion Iliescu passed away on Tuesday, August 5, at the age of 95, after spending the last two months of his life in the hospital. August 7 was declared a day of national mourning in Romania.
