Ex-Boldurești mayor Nicanor Ciochină remains under judicial control for 60 more days

Former Boldurești mayor Nicanor Ciochină, who is accused of fatally injuring a 14-year-old boy, will remain under judicial control for an additional 60 days. On Thursday, August 7, prosecutor Alexandru Butnaru requested the extension of this preventive measure, citing concerns that Ciochină might evade the examination of the criminal case.

Upon the request of the case prosecutor within the PCCOCS, the investigating judge concluded on August 7, 2025, to extend the preventive measure of "provisional release under judicial control" for the accused by a period of 60 days. This was confirmed by Violina Moraru, a spokesperson for the Prosecutor General's Office.

Prosecutor Butnaru addressed the press, stating that the reasons for this extension were outlined in the motion and presented during the court hearing. These reasons included the need to ensure the accused does not evade the examination of the criminal case and to guarantee his presence at the hearings.

Today, the court focused solely on the prosecutor’s motion regarding the extension of the preventive measure for Ciochină, as the magistrate handling the case is currently on annual leave.

The former mayor and his lawyer requested that the prosecutor’s request be rejected. According to the state prosecutor, the trial is still in the evidence examination phase. "The criminal case, the evidence, and the charges are being examined," stated Alexandru Butnaru.

Nicanor Ciochină claimed that the actions taken against him represent "televised justice, ordered for political reasons."

The next hearing in Ciochină's case is scheduled for August 15, although the exact date has not been officially confirmed.

Nicanor Ciochină is accused of murdering Mihăiță Beșliu, a 14-year-old boy from the same town, in February 2024. The case went to court in June 2024, and since then, several court hearings have occurred, many of which were postponed due to the absence of witnesses and defense attorneys.

Ciochină is alleged to have fatally injured Mihăiță on the evening of February 19, 2024, before fleeing the scene. He also attempted to conceal the incident to mislead law enforcement and later ran for re-election as mayor of Boldurești.
