Moldova fights disinformation, blocks TikTok channels

Moldovan authorities have called for the blocking of 443 TikTok channels involved in spreading disinformation that impacts national security and social stability.

According to the National Police, the National Agency for Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI), and the Information and Security Service (SIS), these channels have a combined total of over 1.2 million followers and more than 4.5 million views.

Of these, 98 channels promoted the idea of Moldova's involvement in the war in Ukraine, using manipulative techniques about the National Army's alleged participation and casualties on the front line. Fifty-nine of these have already been blocked. Another 12 channels spread false information about alleged electoral fraud during this year's parliamentary elections, with seven of them now blocked.

In addition, 128 channels were involved in smear campaigns against public figures; 53 of these have been blocked. Ninety-seven channels disseminated messages against the ruling party and content that incited hate and violence, with 43 of them blocked. Two channels with disinformation about the activity of law enforcement agencies were also identified, but they remain active. Similarly, six channels were identified that propagated false theories about the trafficking of Ukrainian minors for sexual exploitation and organ trafficking; two of which have been blocked.

The authorities urge the public to verify information accessed online and to use official, credible sources. "Disinformation represents a serious threat to national stability and security. The National Police, ANRCETI, and SIS continue to intensify coordinated efforts to limit the impact of manipulative campaigns and to protect citizens from the negative effects of the spread of false information," the statement noted.

Data published by TikTok for 2024 indicates that the government in Chișinău submitted 154 requests to the platform regarding content or accounts, with 88 targeting videos. Of these, 64 were removed for violating community guidelines, none based on local legislation, and 24 remain unaddressed. Additionally, 68 accounts were targeted, with 32 of them being removed for violating community guidelines.

The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) is collaborating with Google and Facebook/META to combat disinformation, illegal political financing, and other threats to electoral integrity online.

It is worth noting that in the summer of last year, the CEC held similar discussions with TikTok representatives in the context of the autumn 2024 elections.
