Dormition Fast, one of the year’s most important, started

Orthodox Christians in the Republic of Moldova entered the Fast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary today, August 14, which will last until August 28. It is one of the four great fasting periods in the Orthodox calendar and precedes the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated in the old style at the end of the month.

The origins of this fast date back to the 5th century when it was established to honor the Virgin Mary’s passage to heaven, an event the Church refers to as “falling asleep,” symbolizing the movement of body and soul to God.

During this 14-day period, believers abstain from meat, dairy products, and eggs, and on certain days, also refrain from oil and wine, as specified by the church typicon. The only exception for consuming fish is on August 19, the Transfiguration of the Lord.

In addition to dietary restrictions, fasting is a time for prayer, confession, and good deeds. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is read daily in churches, and believers are encouraged to assist those in need and to practice forgiveness.

The fast concludes on August 28 with the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is celebrated with processions, feasts, and various popular traditions throughout the country.
