Moldova targets citizens abroad with new diaspora engagement program

Moldova's government has approved a new program to better connect with its citizens living abroad. The "Diaspora Engagement Hub", which will run from 2026 to 2028, will support educational, cultural, and civic projects.
It aims to encourage the active involvement of the diaspora and strengthen ties with the Republic of Moldova. The initiative will support Romanian language instruction, cultural and educational activities, and will create new collaboration mechanisms between communities. The ultimate goal is to preserve the national language, culture, and identity.
"For the past four years, the government has been getting closer to our diaspora citizens through tangible projects and tools," said Ana Calinici, the State Secretary of the Executive. "These initiatives help maintain a continuous connection between Moldova and its diaspora."
The scheme is open to Moldovans abroad, as well as representatives of diaspora associations, educational centres, and initiative groups. The government will provide funding of up to 100,000 lei for a single association, or 150,000 lei for a partnership.
"A key new feature is that the decision will allow joint projects between associations abroad and in Moldova, to build bridges and opportunities for shared activities," said Calinici.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated that these initiatives are not just about maintaining a strong connection with those who have left, but also encouraging them to return home.
"We always believe that our citizens are only temporarily abroad, and that’s why we organize events and programmes to make it possible for them to return home as soon as possible," he added.
Additionally, at a government meeting on Wednesday, the State Secretary presented the results of recent activities dedicated to Diaspora Days. More than 750 Moldovans abroad attended the Diaspora Congress, while 200 children from 40 countries went to the "DOR" camp. In addition, 1,500 citizens signed up for the first virtual careers fair. Meanwhile, 40 Romanian language teachers began continuous training programmes, 100 people participated in the Diaspora Football Cup, and another 100 went on hikes with government members.
