Israel has launched the first phase of its planned assault on Gaza City and has already taken control of a suburb, Israeli military spokesperson Effie Defrin announced on Wednesday night. The announcement came via Reuters, citing Agerpres.

The plan for the Israeli army to occupy Gaza City was approved by Defence Minister Israel Katz, who also ordered the mobilisation of 60,000 reservists to take part in the operation. The minister also approved "humanitarian preparations for the evacuation" of the city's population.

Israel had announced in early August its intention to take control of Gaza City and nearby refugee camps, with the stated goal of destroying Hamas and freeing hostages held by the Palestinian movement in the Gaza Strip, according to reports.
