Moldova's national postal service has temporarily suspended shipping parcels to the United States. The measure, which came into effect on Monday, August 25, does not affect letters and documents, which can still be sent.

The move follows an executive order from US President Donald Trump, issued on July 30, which suspends the so-called "de minimis" exception worldwide. Until now, this allowed packages worth up to $800 to be sent to the US free of customs duties.

The new regime, which comes into force on August 29, will see all international shipments taxed. For Moldova, a temporary fixed tariff of $160 per parcel will be applied for the next six months, after which a percentage value-based method will be used, according to the postal service.

Moldova Post says the suspension is a temporary measure, pending clarification from US authorities on customs duty payment procedures.
