Grimsby Town stun Manchester United in the Carabao Cup. The League Two side knocked out the Premier League giants after a dramatic penalty shootout to reach the third round.

The team led by manager Ruben Amorim played their Carabao Cup second-round match on Grimsby Town's home turf. Despite Amorim starting a strong team featuring Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, André Onana, Amad Diallo, and Harry Maguire—each player more valuable than the entire Grimsby squad—the 'Red Devils' were two goals down at the break.

Charles Vernam opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, and Tyrell Warren doubled the lead for the small team from northeast England, after a mix-up from goalkeeper Onana, who failed to deal with a cross. At halftime, Amorim brought on Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, and Matthijs de Ligt. Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee also entered the game in the second half, which changed the flow of play. Mbeumo pulled one back for United in the 75th minute, and Maguire equalized in the 89th, as it seemed United had avoided a humiliating exit.

The competition's rules state that there is no extra time, with the winner decided by a penalty shootout after 90 minutes. The drama reached its peak. The home team's players missed their first, but Matheus Cunha failed to convert his final spot-kick, and the suspense continued.

Another seven flawless penalties followed from each side, including the goalkeepers, before the deadlock was finally broken in favor of Grimsby Town. Darragh Burns converted his penalty, but Mbeumo's effort struck the crossbar. Grimsby Town won the shootout 13-12, and Manchester United, after an 11-year gap, were knocked out in the second round.
