Romanian Language Day 2025: Presidents Sandu and Dan strengthen ties

Romanian President Nicusor Dan and Moldovan President Maia Sandu have underscored the importance of the Romanian language as a unifying force, speaking at a major cultural event in Chișinău.
The presidents’ remarks were made at the third Great National Dictation, an event held to mark Romanian Language Day. The speeches were delivered to hundreds of participants in the Great National Assembly Square, who gave them a standing ovation.
President Sandu noted the growing popularity of the event, which she said demonstrates the Romanian language's ability to inspire and unite society. She highlighted the presence of her Romanian counterpart as a gesture of solidarity and a sign of the strong ties between the two nations.
"It carries our history, preserves our culture, and connects us to our values and traditions," she said. She added that it must be "honoured and cherished every day—when we choose to speak correctly, write neatly, and lovingly use its expressions and rich vocabulary... This is how we keep it alive and pass it on to future generations."
For his part, Romanian President Nicusor Dan spoke emotionally about his personal connection to the Romanian language. He praised Moldovans for their ongoing "struggle" to preserve their language and identity "despite all pressures."
"You are, in my opinion, an example for Europe and the entire world for the way you are trying to defend democracy against the same types of pressures coming from the same place," President Dan said. "You prove that you are more European than the Europeans, and that your place is in the European Union."
The Romanian President concluded that the two countries "need each other" and have a responsibility to "build a promising future together."
The event, organized by the Ministry of Education and Research under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova, gathered some 2,000 participants who tested their knowledge of Romanian spelling and grammar.
