Iwona Piorko: Polish diplomat named new EU head in Moldova

Polish diplomat Iwona Piorko has been appointed head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Moldova, after more than two decades working for the bloc's institutions.

The appointment was announced by the European External Action Service (EEAS).

She will succeed Jānis Mažeiks, who is completing his term in Chisinau.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Ms Piorko said she was "honoured to be appointed EU ambassador to the Republic of Moldova".

She added: "I look forward to working with the excellent team at the EU Delegation in Moldova. Thank you, Jānis Mažeiks, for bringing the EU-Moldova relationship to new heights."

Ms Piorko is currently the EU ambassador to Singapore. She previously served as head of the international affairs unit at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship, and SMEs.

Her past roles at the European Commission and other EU institutions have included a focus on economic policy, international trade, and foreign relations, with an emphasis on long-term strategies and international co-operation projects.

Mr Mažeiks is due to leave his post in Moldova in September, having led the EU Delegation in Chisinau since September 2021.
