Maia Sandu, Alain Berset discuss Moldova’s upcoming Council of Europe presidency

The Republic of Moldova is set to assume the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe from November 2025 until May 2026. President Maia Sandu held discussions in Strasbourg with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, regarding the preparations for this transition. They talked about enhancing cooperation through the Republic of Moldova - Council of Europe Action Plan and adopting new measures to safeguard democracy and bolster resilience against external interference.
During the discussions, the Moldovan president emphasized the crucial role of the Council of Europe, particularly through the Parliamentary Assembly, the Venice Commission, and the European Court of Human Rights, in fostering democratic development in the Republic of Moldova and strengthening the rule of law.
Maia Sandu reaffirmed the commitment to continuing reforms, particularly in the justice sector, in line with citizens' expectations and the requirements for European Union accession.
Additionally, the President expressed the Republic of Moldova’s readiness to actively contribute to the consolidation of democracy, the rule of law, and European unity during her tenure as Chairperson of the Committee of Ministers.

In Strasbourg, Maia Sandu delivered a speech at the European Parliament and also met with Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, and Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The Republic of Moldova remains firmly committed to safeguarding its democracy as it moves towards a brighter European future," Maia Sandu wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter).

In Strasbourg, the head of state met with leaders from several political groups, including the European People's Party, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, the Renew Europe group, the European Conservatives and Reformists, and the Greens.
During these discussions, the head of state emphasized the importance of continued support from the community legislature for Moldova's EU accession process. This support includes economic assistance for the country. Maia Sandu also expressed her approval of the decision to open a European Parliament liaison office in Chișinău.
The president highlighted Moldova's progress on its European path, the necessity of upholding the democratic process, ensuring the integrity of elections, and the need for a unified response to current security challenges. She underscored that peace and security in the country can be secured through active diplomacy and strong relationships with its partners and neighbors.
