Former ‘Sor’ Party activist from Glodeni jailed for illegal financing

The president of the Glodeni territorial office of the former "Sor" Party was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for complicity in receiving financing for the political party from an organized criminal group. This extended sentence was announced on September 8 by the Chisinau Court based in Buiucani.

According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, between July and October 2022, a woman accepted over 5.3 million lei from an organized criminal group. This money was used to finance protests organized by the "Sor" Party and to pay salaries "in envelopes" to members of their territorial offices.

Although the defendant denied the charges, the court found the prosecution's evidence compelling and established her guilt.

In addition to her sentence in the women's penitentiary, the court prohibited her from holding leadership positions in political parties or their organizations. She is also barred from managing financial or logistical activities within political formations or associative entities with political purposes for a period of five years.

Until a final decision is made, the defendant remains in preventive detention and will be transferred to the penitentiary to serve her sentence.

Additionally, over 5.3 million lei were confiscated from her account for the benefit of the state. This amount was deemed to be the financial means used to commit the crime, along with a mobile phone.

The court also upheld the seizure of assets valued at over 1.5 million lei.
