Romanian President Nicușor Dan: Pro-Russian government in Chișinău could destabilize region

Romanian President Nicușor Dan warned in an interview with TVR Moldova on September 10 that a potential pro-Russian government in Chisinau could destabilize the region and enable the deployment of additional Russian troops to the left bank of the Nistru River. He emphasized that this situation would create direct pressure on Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, and Romania.

Nicușor Dan expressed his support for the warning issued by the President Maia Sandu in the European Parliament, regarding the risks to democracy and foreign interference in the upcoming elections in the Republic of Moldova. He noted that during last year's elections, networks of paid individuals had been documented, a fact confirmed by law enforcement agencies in Chișinău.

"This issue is not only a problem for the Republic of Moldova, a small country in Europe, but for the entire continent. Beyond the widespread disinformation that we see across European countries—filled with fake news and other challenges that our public has grown accustomed to—this is a significant concern. European leaders have shown their support for the Republic of Moldova,” emphasized Nicușor Dan.

The Romanian president emphasized the importance of respecting the will of the citizens and encouraged Moldovans to participate in the elections scheduled for September 28. He underscored that the country's European direction is critical and could be realized by the Republic of Moldova's potential accession to the European Union in 2028.

"It would be a shame for the Republic of Moldova to abandon its European path, especially since we are very close to achieving this goal," declared Nicușor Dan.

Additionally, the Romanian president noted that nationalist and sovereignist propaganda across the Prut River frequently exploits the themes of support provided to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine by Romania, using them as tools for public manipulation.

On September 9, during her speech in the European Parliament, President Maia Sandu stated that the Republic of Moldova is facing "a hybrid war without limits, on an unprecedented scale, similar to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine." She warned that the objective of the Russian Federation is to "capture" Moldova by influencing election results to use the country against Ukraine.

For this reason, the parliamentary elections on September 28 are considered "the most decisive election in history," as their results will determine not only the future of Moldova but also "regional security and stability."
