Since the beginning of this year, people caught setting fire to grass and vegetable waste in fields or households were fined over 1.2 million lei, according to the General Inspectorate for Emergencies (IGSU).

According to IGSU, most fines were imposed on legal entities that violated environmental legislation.

Responsible individuals have paid at least 127,000 lei for setting fires or allowing vegetation to burn.

Over 3,600 vegetation fires were recorded at the beginning of the year, affecting thousands of hectares of land. These fires not only damage the environment but also pose dangers to people.

Tragically, a 63-year-old woman from the village of Dănceni in the Ialoveni district lost her life due to a dry vegetation fire. The incident occurred in the afternoon of September 10. The woman sustained serious burns while attempting to extinguish the fire herself. Despite being taken to the hospital for medical treatment, she could not be saved.

It is important to note that burning dry leaves and other plant debris is prohibited in the Republic of Moldova. The Contravention Code stipulates fines of 10,000 to 15,000 lei for individuals and 30,000 to 40,000 lei for legal entities that violate this law and cause significant harm to the environment and human health.
