MEP Siegfried Mureșan: "Moldova and Ukraine are testing grounds — Russia’s real target is Europe

Russia's interference in the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova poses a threat not only to Chisinau but also to the entire European continent. MEP Siegfried Mureșan asserts that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are merely a "testing ground," with the Kremlin's objective being clear: to influence elections, promote pro-Russian politicians, and undermine European democracies.

In a Facebook post, a European official highlighted that Moscow is investing unprecedented resources and utilizing cutting-edge technology to manipulate voters. This manipulation encompasses content generated with artificial intelligence and disseminated by bots, as well as electoral bribes transmitted via cryptocurrencies directly from Russia.

“The fight of the Republic of Moldova is our fight as well. If Moldova wins and remains European and democratic, all of Europe wins. If it loses, we all lose,” the Member of the European Parliament (MEP) stated, emphasizing the need for strong European support for Chisinau.

Mureșan also mentioned that European democracies must stay united and provide an "antidote" to Russian interference, which aims to destabilize states on the borders of the European Union through innovative methods of disinformation and electoral corruption.

Additionally, in an interview with Radio Moldova, MEP Eugen Tomac emphasized that the parliamentary elections on September 28 will be crucial in determining the Republic of Moldova's geopolitical direction and its future within the European Union. He indicated that the election outcome could either block or expedite the process of European integration, given that the Russian Federation seeks to destabilize the country and maintain it in a politically and strategically controllable sphere.

"If things take an unfortunate turn, everything that has been achieved so far risks being put on hold, at best. The context is clear regarding Russia's current objectives. People need to understand that this is not just a vote; it's a natural part of the democratic process with significant implications. The stakes are much higher, with serious geopolitical consequences, especially considering Russia's desire for a Republic of Moldova that it can easily influence, particularly in light of the ongoing crimes in Ukraine," declared MEP Eugen Tomac on Radio Moldova.

Recently, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning Russia's interference and reaffirming its strong support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova.

We remind you that the parliamentary elections will take place on September 28, featuring 23 electoral competitors, including four blocs and four independent candidates.
