Bomb alert delays hearing in Plahotniuc’s billion-dollar theft case

A bomb alert was reported at the Chisinau Courthouse in Buiucani, where the hearing for the only case filed against Vladimir Plahotniuc was set to begin. As a result of the alert, the examination of the "billion-dollar theft" case was postponed, and everyone in the building was evacuated.

According to the Moldova 1 TV team, present at the scene, pyrotechnic specialists are checking the perimeter, while access to the headquarters remains restricted.

The file examined refers to the 2014 banking fraud, known as the "billion dollar theft". According to investigators, Vladimir Plahotniuc would have benefited from over $ 39 million and 3.51 million euros, amounts originating from Banca de Economii, Unibank, and Banca Socială.

This is the only file in which the former democratic leader is listed as a defendant and has already been added to the court docket. In parallel, Plahotniuc is also targeted in other criminal cases – including "Metalferos", "Kuliok" and the file regarding passport blanks – which are still in the criminal investigation phase.

We recall that Vladimir Plahotniuc, a former politician and businessman, was extradited to the Republic of Moldova from Greece after more than six years and three months since his flight from the country.

On the morning of September 25, the aircraft carrying Plahotniuc landed at the “Eugen Doga” International Airport in Chisinau. Later, accompanied by several police teams, he was transported to Penitentiary No. 13 in the capital, where he will be held in a separate cell.
