National Wine Day unites winemakers nationwide; government approves Grand Prize

Chisinau will host the 24th edition of National Wine Day this weekend, on October 4 and 5. The event will gather 106 wineries from all regions of the country and thousands of visitors in the Great National Assembly Square. Traditionally, the authorities will award the Grand Prize for outstanding merits in the winemaking field, a decision in this regard being approved on Wednesday, October 1, by the Government.

“The distinction recognizes the outstanding quality of local wines and highlights the contribution made to the development of national wine tourism,” said the Government Spokesperson, Daniel Vodă, in the briefing held after the meeting.

This year’s candidate was selected by a commission established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, following the examination of the files submitted by wine companies. The winner’s name will be announced at the ceremony in the Great National Assembly Square.

The 106 participating wineries will bring their own stories about work, tradition, and innovation. Visitors will be able to discover traditional wines and new ones, including some that are not typically available in the trade.

“From established producers to small winemakers who surprise each time with innovation and passion, each stand will tell a unique story about Moldova’s winemaking tradition,” emphasized the Government Spokesperson.

At the Wine School, sommeliers and oenologists will offer interactive sessions about local varieties and explain the specific flavors, the peculiarities of wine-growing regions and the correct way to evaluate wine. And in the Peasant Court, visitors can participate in workshops for pottery, weaving, sculpture, or folk dance.

This year, for the first time, the taster ticket is available only in digital format.

“It also includes useful information about the wineries and the event program, discounts and other promotional offers. Tickets can be purchased online at iticket.md and are valid for the two days of the festival,” said Daniel Vodă.

The authorities note that the National Wine Day is a celebration of the cultural and economic identity of the Republic of Moldova. Wine continues to be an ambassador of the country abroad, and this year’s events confirm the maturity and potential of a sector that is becoming increasingly present on the international stage.

For the first time, the Republic of Moldova hosted the World Wine Congress this year. The capital also hosted the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, one of the most prestigious international competitions, where Moldovan wines were evaluated alongside world-renowned labels. With 21 medals, including five gold medals, Moldovan wines have consolidated their reputation as quality and refined products.

In the first eight months of the year, the Republic of Moldova exported wines to 65 countries. 59% of wines are exported to European Union member states. Romania remains the primary market for bottled wines, with a 26% value increase compared to the same period last year. A spectacular evolution is noted in Nigeria, which entered the top ten export destinations, with a rise of 141% compared to 2024.
