Moldova Wine Day sets record with 106 wineries as exports face US market challenge

Moldova’s National Wine Day has set a new participation record, bringing together 106 wineries, including small local producers.
Speaking to Moldova 1 public broadcaster, Maxim Cataraciuc, Deputy Director of the National Office for Vine and Wine (NOVW), said the event not only highlights excellence but also strengthens Moldova's global position and focuses on boosting exports.
"The interesting part is the increasing number of new, small and medium-sized producers trying to launch businesses in this sector. The results are encouraging, particularly as smaller and medium-sized wineries are creating exciting surprises, securing a huge number of awards and medals in international competitions," Mr. Cataraciuc said.
He noted that the event has drawn the attention of international media and foreign specialists, reflecting global interest in Moldovan wines.
"We have not only visiting journalists but also specialists, sommeliers, and buyers—those who purchase our products for large international retail chains. Crucially, we are also seeing a large influx of tourists," he added.
While large producers remain the pillars of the wine industry, Mr. Cataraciuc stressed the growth potential of small and medium-sized producers as future industry leaders.
"Every small winemaker eventually dreams of a larger scale, more export markets, and better quality products. This is why the NOVW and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry support the creation and development of new ventures. We firmly believe we can achieve better results by equally supporting smaller and medium-sized winemakers," he affirmed.
The Deputy Director also said the wine industry is facing difficulties, which is why local producers are seeking solutions by diversifying export markets.
"In 2025, we faced difficulties with US market exports, which led to a small but undeniable decline linked to economic relations with the US. We hope producers can compensate for this deficit. Exporters who traditionally shipped to the US are already trying to compensate by targeting other markets, but mitigating these effects will certainly take time—probably over the next two to three years," Mr. Cataraciuc estimated.
Another key objective is to promote responsible consumption and a deeper appreciation of wine diversity. "We are aiming to promote moderate, correct, professional consumption, where everyone can discover new colours, new aromas, and new blends," the Deputy Director added.
The 24th National Wine Day takes place on 4 and 5 October in Chișinău’s Great National Assembly Square, under the slogan: "The Wine of Moldova. A Legend Alive." Attractions include: The Wine School (interactive sessions with certified sommeliers); The Peasant's Courtyard (traditional craft workshops and dances); and Wine Tours to Moldova’s cellars and vineyards. In addition, the "Golden Barrel" competition, with 450 registered wines, will award the best homemade wine producers on Sunday, 5 October.
