Alexandru Tătaru, the winemaker from Călărași with the "golden barrel"
Throughout the centuries, wine has been a companion in moments of joy as well as in times of uncertainty. It has played a significant role in celebrations, during agricultural work, and has brought families together around the table. Wine has become a language of love for the land, a tradition passed down through generations. In Vălcineț, located in the Călărași district, this rich legacy is carried forward through the passion and dedication of Alexandru Tătaru, a devoted winemaker who views wine as his vocation.
Alexandru Tătaru learned the art of winemaking from his father and grandfather. He produces wine today in the traditional manner, taking great care and patience with each grape.
"When I was little, I was curious and wanted to help. My grandfather would tell me, 'You can't help because you're too small; you can't spin the crusher.' I would try to spin it anyway, learning from my parents. My father always said, 'Wash the barrels well, my boy!' My grandfather echoed the same sentiment. The barrels need to be cleaned thoroughly. The biggest secret, especially with wooden barrels, is that they must not retain any particular smell," Alexandru shared.
In his cellar in Vălcineț, the must (young wine) transforms into wine, and patience plays an essential role in the process.
"I mostly make wine from hybrid varieties, but I also produce European and technical varieties. I create about 300 to 400 liters—I don’t make more than that. A little goes for marketing, and I share some with friends or for birthdays," he added.
Alexandru's work has gained national recognition, earning him the "Golden Barrel" trophy twice, in 2008 and 2011.
"I think the committee appreciated something special about my wine. I was overjoyed when they announced the award; it was an emotional moment for me. Receiving such a prestigious recognition on a big stage in Chișinău was incredible," Alexandru said.
