Moldova EU membership: Brussels pledges support 'every step of the way'

Moldova is set to successfully complete its path to European Union (EU) membership, and Brussels will remain by its citizens' side "every step of the way."

The statement was made by Iwona Piórko, the EU Ambassador to Chișinău, in an interview with Moldova 1—the first the diplomat has given since taking up her post.

Ms Piórko noted that the recent parliamentary election results confirm Moldovan citizens' determination to consolidate their European path, despite external pressures.

"The Republic of Moldova belongs to the European family, and this will accelerate our integration process. We will reach the European Union together," the Ambassador said on public television.

The Ambassador said the European Union would continue to support reforms in the fields of justice, economy, and the rule of law, adding that these are essential for the country's prosperity and stability.

The full interview is set to air on Sunday, 12 October, at 18:00 (EET) on Moldova 1. It will also be available online via YouTube and Facebook (Moldova 1), as part of the programme "The Diplomatic Dimension."

Ambassador Piórko also discussed, in the same interview, the screening recently finalised by Moldova; reforms in justice and the rule of law; the impact of the geopolitical context on the EU's enlargement process; the European Economic Growth Plan; the increase in export quotas for Moldovan agricultural products; accession to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA); and major infrastructure projects supported by the EU.
