Expert warning: How small screens can damage children's vision and cause eye strain

Children and screens appear inseparable, but using devices for more than two hours a day poses a serious risk to children's sight, specialists warn.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Irina Rotaru noted that a growing number of children are seeking treatment for eye problems, adding that a smaller screen size increases the negative impact.

In a new report, one child said they only use their phone "for around half an hour," before adding: "You can ruin your eyesight and end up wearing glasses."

Another child stated: "I don't spend much time on the computer, mostly on my phone—I spend up to four and a half hours a day."

Dr. Rotaru stressed that any screen exposure is harmful to the eyes.

She explained that screens should be held a minimum of 60-70 centimeters from the eyes. If the distance is less than 50 centimetres, the eye's accommodation (the mechanism for focusing on near objects) is activated.

"An intraocular muscle can spasm, leading to blurry vision, eye strain, pain, and stinging, among other symptoms," Dr. Rotaru explained.
